This is a handy roll of peel-off labels with nice big black numbers 0001 to 1000. I'm using them to organize my media collection after which I will alphabetize the list by title (with number following the title) via computer to make an inventory list to keep track of location. I would like the labels to be smaller, but there just wasn't anything available between "too teeny to read from a distance" and these. I wish there was a set about 1/4 this size, but these will serve. And the glue does seem to be sticking to the plastic OK, at least for now. We'll see how it does over time.

This was the most affordable Windows 7 that I found that I can use to install on my Macbook Pro through Parallels 6. At first I was debating on going with the 64bit or the 32bit, because some software do not work on 64bit. I ended up going with 64bit -- those non-compatible software should update, not me.

Using Windows 7 on a Mac is awesome. Best of both worlds.

This is the exact same version of Operating Systems that come pre-installed by all system manufacturers and I am writing this review to both caution and make everyone aware about an apparent change to the Microsoft EULA (End-User License Agreement) concerning the Activation process of these "System Builder" or "OEM pre-installed" versions of the Windows 7 Operating Systems (the capped portion was never a condition for previous versions of Windows Operating Systems, which USED TO be tied ONLY to the system's motherboard through the BIOS) and which states:

"Activation associates the use of the software with a specific computer. During activation, the software will send information about the software and the computer to Microsoft. This information includes the version, language and product key of the software, the Internet protocol address of the computer, and INFORMATION DERIVED FROM THE HARDWARE CONFIGURATION OF THE COMPUTER." - Section 4, Mandatory Validation.

This means that it is NO LONGER just tied to the system's motherboard (BIOS) as is still popularly believed, but now to ALL hardware components and their exact configuration (including unique serial numbers where applicable) of the target computer on which all OEM or "System Builder" versions of the Windows Operating System in question that is to be tied to them.

Just recently, my Acer Notebook's IDE 0 (Master) hard disk decided to fail on me after just 1 year and 8 months, and of course outside of the warranty period. So I replaced it not knowing of the aforementioned condition of the pre-installed EULA of this product which would BREAK my completely legal and fully purchased version of the pre-installed Operating System the very second I swapped the failing and the new functioning hard drives. Lo and behold, after the change of the hard drive model, serial number and capacity, my pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium recovery disks (both a freshly ordered set and also a self-made image set) kept returning: "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer's hardware" and kept restarting on the "Setup" screen and would go no further, no matter what I tried (on ALL six installation attempts). Curious, I perused the EULA to see if it could give me any information for why this was happening and discovered the reason for this to be the replacement of a faulty hard drive and because the pre-installed OEM version had remembered the original hardware configuration, and would not permit it's use just because of the new hard drive installation! And again, to remind you, on previous Windows versions, this was NEVER the case UNLESS the motherboard was changed!

If I had not been given a legal retail license key by a friend who owns their own computer repair business along with access to the .ISO bootable disk, I would have wound up with a fully functional $800 (+ $134.99 for the hard drive replacement) paperweight because of this problem. This is yet another prime example of how these monopoly software corporations are scheming up new and more devious ways to force us all to re-purchase again and again their products should misfortune strike (as it did for me with my original hard drive on this system)... or so it sure seems to me!

So for all of you system builders out there who love to tinker around or else upgrade their computer's hardware components, do yourself a huge favor right now to avoid financial heartache and just get the full retail version of your chosen Windows Operating System for a slightly larger cost... otherwise you will wind up spending TWICE or even more than what the full and transferable Operating System would have cost you in the first place! It happened to me, and it WILL happen to you somewhere down the line. And I must state that Linux Ubuntu is looking more and more attractive to me (a life-time Microsoft Windows user) with every new "Windows" OS and all of their new "conditions" intended to only cause misery for your support of them and their software...

Bottom line: a purchased and legitimate "OEM" Operating System being broken after a simple hard drive replacement ON THE SAME COMPUTER IT CAME WITH is absolutely and unequivocally UNACCEPTABLE, Microsoft!

Loved It!!!!!!!, July 27, 2006

A Kid's Review

I think this backpack was so amazing to me because I used it from 2nd grade to 7th grade and I still have it now. I happen to love rainbow, so I chose the color of "Peace Out." You Can Fit almost anything in there and the backpack can fit into almost anywhere. I definetly recommend it to anyone, any age is perfect. I want to keep this backpack for a long time. But best of all, if you want to keep it forever, the colors never fade out. So you will still notice the colors even ten years after you purchased it. I think I will definetly buying more things from Amazon. At least I'll be sure it will last a very long time.Horray for Amazon!!!!!

Super backpack is right!, July 25, 2006

I owned one of these for over 10 years. It went through college with me and was big enough for all of my books, etc. Post college, my son used it for school and during it all, it went traveling with us several times a year. I probably would still have it and use it for travel except that on one of those trips, I parked my car across from the Air & Space Museum in D.C. and someone broke in. All they took was my pack and a knit cap...so even the homeless(?) know a good pack when they see it. They left all kinds of electronic games they could have sold for some dough!

This is OEM which means the difference is that this version locks itself to a single motherboard. As long as you run the same system your golden, but when you upgrade you will have to purchase another copy.

Jawbreaker. One of the greatest bands there will ever be. They grew on me, not like a wart, but like a super powerful emotion taking over my heartstrings and tugging every chance they got. Every time I hear this band I love them more. Music that tears through your eardrums and wakes up your soul. Lyrics so beautiful and true. It's so great to be able to find these albums on-line too because they are pretty hard to find. You don't know what you got 'till it's gone.

I bought this out of Blake's hand at a random show my friend recommended in 1992. To this day it might be the best $7 I've ever spent as far as the number of hours of pleasure I got out of it.

From the opening track "Shield Your Eyes" containing the primal growl in Blake's voice, the fast chord based guitar that is a Jawbreaker staple, well above average drum work by Adam that almost but not quite overshadows Chris' bass work (catch the odd key change near the end of "Shield...") this is track by track one of the finest punk albums. Sure Blake later wrote a song claiming not to be punk, but you can't tell from this one. "Face Down" and "Like a Secret" are also great tracks. "Chesterfield King" probably the best drum work. The title track which became the closing song of nearly every Jawbreaker set closes the disc in a classic, imploding, punk-feedback, aural assault.

What's now considered Emoticor (emo) probably never would have reached the radio status of today without Jawbreaker getting signed to Geffen. Unfortanately, this also caused a great band's end.

This is on my imaginary "10 on a desert island list."

Rare medium well done, October 18, 2006

Much better than most of today's contemporary TV programs, this series has depth of character and it does not lose momentum through the first season.

The first DVD contains the conclusion to the cliffhangers from the first season. Some of the characters in the pilot to make it into the regular episodes. This package even has a fun though maybe distracting to some 3-D. I got out my glasses and ooohd and aaahd.

Great formula as Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette) who has a gift since childhood of talking to the dead and getting physique vibes. She diagnoses or misdiagnoses crime scenes for a local district attorneys office. As her child puts it she is a "guesser." Natural they are the skeptics with negative attitudes to overcome and obscure mental images to be interpreted. She must also do this while balancing housework, kids, and a husband that can be snot at times. There is usually a quirky twist in the end of each episode.

Bottom line is that you can get hooked on the series and will feel cheated when you run out of episodes. It is interesting that they spread the abilities around in the family instead of keeping just to Allison.

Just to let you know that Medium's got a lot of success in France too. Season 1 and season 2 have been broadcasted altogether from November 2005 to July 2006 with very good audience rate.

The main reasons for this success are pretty much the same everywhere I guess: very good cast lead by the unique Patricia Arquette who can make you laugh and cry from one minute to the other, supernatural atmosphere, suspense and of course, this more than real family life that makes you feel like you're spying on your neighbors apart from the fact that this family is far better than your neighbors, they're funny, loving and moving just like we wish we could all be.

Now I'm just looking forward to discover season 3!!!

I ordered 24 of these burgers. It was my first time trying Omaha Steaks and I'm rather disappointed. While they do hold their shape well and cook fairly quickly, they do not have much flavor at all. Way too similar to regular supermarket frozen patties. They are a let down for the price. You'd get more texture, flavor, and value from standard ground beef. Definitely not worth $45. I'd give them 2 and a half stars if possible.

Just call me a sucker!!! Ordered a bunch of steaks, burgers, hot dogs, potatoes, and fish from Omaha Steaks. Poorest meat I have ever eaten. We can get better quality at Walmart and even better yet at the local butcher shop. Then we are bombarded with phone sales calls and junk mail. Wished I would never have fallen for "Best Steaks you have ever eaten". Will never purchase again.

I purchased a combination package including this item via a Kindle Special Offer a couple of months ago. The food was packaged well and tastes fine. If you make a purchase from this company, though, be prepared for a BARRAGE of followup solicitation calls. Once you've had a transaction with a company, they are "allowed" to contact you via phone (incessantly) for a period of 2 years after the last transaction, even if you are on the National No Call Registry. Any apparent "deal" comes at the cost of providing them a foot in the door to hound you.

Still, it's a good read, mostly. Many chapters are interesting for the further reading they suggest, or questions they raise.

A collection of first person narratives from some of the leaders of the quant revolution in financial markets over the last 3 decades. Some of the story telling seemed perfunctory, but in other cases it was downright inspiring. Most provide insight into the workings of Wall Street and the more exotic instruments and strategies in play in today's markets, and as such were of value to this non-professional reader.

Poor editing became annoying; words were not only misspelled, they were actually missing and had to be inferred from context.

Emmanuel Derman's "My Life as a Quant" provides only one story and not 25, but it is told with deep personal insight and a sense of humor. It also provides more technical discussion of a number of the important financial models developed and utilized in the market since the 1980s. For those interested in understanding how a hard scientist transitions from academia into finance, I would recommend it as a much better starting place than "How I Became a Quant."

Although people may argue why this and that person was not on the Wall Street's quant elite list, I'd say that the authors picked an amazing list of 25 quants, representing quantitative equity portfolio management, market microstructure, derivatives pricing, and risk management. Yes, as you may not be aware of, there are two types of quants, one in quantitative equity/market microstructure and one in derivatives pricing/risk management. They are somewhat related, but use very different tools. The former is less well known until early 2000s (the boom of market neutral hedge funds) and the latter is overly covered in academic programs since late 1990s.

It's very interesting and inspiring to learn how these 25 quants became quants. Many with physics/math background came to finance, due to the cut of funding in hard science after the cold war. Many people became quants because of "accident". Few people came to this world because they had wanted to do quant finance from the beginning. Of course, it's all different now. Smart and ambitious university students aim at quant finance from day one. There are also many graduate computation finance/financial engineering/math finance programs to choose from, so you don't have to go through a lengthy PhD program.

Life is highly path dependent (as many of the 25 quants said in the book). Choose your career careful, but more importantly, choose something that you really enjoy (and hopefully, also something you are really good at) - this is one of the key messages in the book. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with a keen interest in joining the quant finance world.

Too many problems, November 29, 2007

Beware if you have an overclocked system. This game will blue screen. Game also has very weak support for Nvidia 7 series cards. In particular with High Detail Shaders which also causes the game to blue screen. I can't speak for everyone of course but I know that myself and many others have these issues still (10/29/07) and there is still no patch. These problems are highlighted on most tech forums including the 2k games forum.

Now for the game.

My first impression was WOW! Graphics were impressive albeit somewhat grainy as AA is not supported. Lots of very cool water and blur effects. The atmosphere is somewhat original. Has a 1940s/50s art deco thing going. Victrola playing in the background, Nazi scientists, surgical theaters... the whole shebang. That aspect of the game was very well done. The rest of it though, I can only sum it up as "sensory overload". Like many games of this sort (The Suffering 2 for instance), all the "psycho-physics" eventually start to numb your senses and the attempts at "shock" just become tiring. The swearing, screaming, brutality, and sexuality, it all just gets boring after a while.

When you couple all that with the really weird copy protection - this game is NOT worth the aggravation.

2K games and their draconian DRM, November 2, 2007

I purchased a used version of this game. I did play it and thought the game was ok. However, what I did not like is the Digital Rights Management (DRM) that they used for the game. After what has happened, I will not buy anymore 2K games. Information was kept hidden from (or simply not divulged to) consumers that would have effected my decision to purchase the game. You will need an Internet account to activate the game and be able to play it. You are allowed only 5 activations before you can no longer install the game anymore. If you do not uninstall the game, you will use up another activation. "You are not warned about this anywhere". If the game files become corrupt or you need to reformat your hard drive and you do not or cannot uninstall the game, you lose an activation. The Digital Rights Management (DRM) in this game is real draconian and bad enough that I will not by any more 2K Games. I think if they are going to implement this kind of DRM, it should say so on the box and fully explain your limitations. It does not. That information is kept from you. I feel like I got burned. No more 2K games for me.

Let's keep this sweet, organized and fair.

UNDISPUTED FACT:
BIOSHOCK will only install for a limited number of times (it was 3 but - after a deluge of eMails and bad reviews - it was upped to 5). So, if you install it you will be reluctant to uninstall once finished and will have to carry those 9GB on your HardDrive for a long time. On top of that, its resale value is down the drain the moment one pops the box open...
Even after the patch that removed the activation limit, uninstalling still leaves behind certain irremovable folders that will make sure it can be re-established in the future.
So one has to ask: even after paying $50 for it, WHO ACTUALLY OWNS MY COPY?

UNDISPUTED FACT:
The game utilizes an overzealous version of SecuROM 7+. They either activated all its available options or had a special version custom made. No other game company dared behaving in such heavy-handed way. This means that if your computer has more than one disc drive (or even one but non-DRM certified) it may block them, whereas the game may not even install if you are running virtual drives or have certain media-burning software installed (even NERO has been known to be considered ..."pirate-ware"!)

DISPUTED FACT :
It has been widely reported that BIOSHOCK installs a RootKit. Both MICROSOFT's ROOTKIT DETECTION TOOL and AVG ANTI-VIRUS detected either the RootKit or its actions. Recently, AVG was made to release a special update (just for BIOSHOCK) to ignore this alert.
In hacker lingo, to "take someone's Root" means to insert a procedure that "will allow the intruders to maintain root access (highest privilege) on the system without the system administrator even seeing them".
Official BIOSHOCK announcements (and their "unofficial" reviewers here at AMAZON) will try to persuade everyone who would listen that there is nothing there, so stop looking and don't even mention it.
Understandable reaction since, the existence of a RootKit would be a solid basis for class-action litigation.
Weight the facts and judge for yourself.

UNDISPUTED FACT:
BIOSHOCK effectively revokes our Administrator rights on our own computers. Here is what happens: even after completely uninstalling the game there is a mystery folder that canNOT be removed, no matter what!
On WinXP it is located here:
"C:Documents and Settings[User Name]Application DataSecuRom"
As administrators, we could (unwisely) delete even Windows System folders - yet BIOSHOCK's mystery folder apparently claims a higher authority level? What this folder does and why should it get placed into OUR computers so that we cannot remove it even as Administrators, is beyond me. And I, for one, do NOT appreciate it one bit. (A quick internet search revealed a number of suggestions on how to get rid of it, ranging from clearly unsafe to catastrophic...)
True, almost every game leaves one or two folders behind after uninstalled - but this NEVER REVOKES OUR ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS to delete them!

I do understand that there are production and publishing costs to get recovered as well as profit projections to be reached. Companies that wish to protect their investment will always try to fight piracy. This is only reasonable and expected.
However, with BIOSHOCK, as it is currently available by 2K GAMES, it gets WAY OUT OF HAND & WELL BEYOND RIDICULOUS!!

No one in the game-publishing industry seems to learn from past mistakes: every security system eventually gets cracked and every "OnLine activation requirement" eventually gets bypassed. So, utilizing an overly intrusive, inconvenient and possibly dangerous security kit only serves in penalizing the people who actually paid good money for their product - and manage to shoot their sales in the foot at the same time.
Look what happened with HALF-LIFE 2: legitimate buyers still have to put up with activating the game every time we want to play - and of course VALVE paid the price: unprotected HL1 had sold TWICE as many units as STEAM-"secured" HL2 ever did (8million and 4million respectively, Source: THE WASHINGHTON POST)

Since I would NEVER install a contraption such as BIOSHOCK onto my computer and wished to have hands-on experience before I reviewed the game, I asked around and a colleague of mine had already made the mistake of purchasing it and installing on his laptop.
THIS IS NOT A BAD GAME.
The environments are well designed and have a pleasant retro patina; the graphics are very nice, even though they do not meet the hype. They are comparble to older games such as HL2 (not to mention STALKER).
You see, dark is not always moody, and blurry cannot always be mistaken for dreamy.
I did love the music though! Both the collection of happy-go-lucky and Big-Band romantic 1940's songs (contrasting with the bleak environment) as well as their smart timing, added to the overall... Read more

This episode of NMND "Hand of Betrayal", actually hit home for me because I personally know this elderly man. Long time ago about 8 years, I was his wife's nurse and the couple were an amazing couple and she later died and he lived alone. Mr Taylor was a great man very caring and would do anything for anybody. I did not want to watch the episode at first but, I had to because I knew him. All the episodes are learning experiences for us all to be very careful out in this crazy world, that is why I give this a five star.

Looking for an adrenaline rush that makes you think? Get Jawbreaker. Gary Berntsen is a no-bull... kind of guy, who goes into the hottest spots and gets the job done. He was sent into Afghanistan to defeat the Taliban and corner Bin Laden, and that's what he did in record time, leaving the folks in DC and CENTCOM scratching their heads. Even when he had OBL cornered, General Franks and the military couldn't step up to the plate with a measily 800 U.S. Rangers. Sickening.

There's more. Much more. For example, Berntsen was part of a CIA team that was in Afghanistan with plans to kidnap a OBL lieutenant in early 2000, but was pulled out when people in CIA headquarters got nervous. Thanks.

Jawbreaker should be required reading for all Americans over the age of 18. All U.S. Senators and Congressmen should be ordered to read it twice.

Since there is a limited amount of study materials for the ACNP exam, this book is pretty much the most updated book out there. I would recomend using it along with one of the review courses (I went to the course through Barkley-Its awesome!) There is a lot of review questions that cover a large amount of material... HOWEVER the book advertises that you can go online to get additional review questions and they are all the same from the book-word for word with NO additional questions. They also have a master 200 question test that is again-the SAME questions from the book. What a waste!! The text makes you think you are getting this online code with addtional questions- and all it is the same questions you already have in the book-with the ability to view them online. Overall not a bad study guide-its basically all thats out there that is up to date. I would recommend a review course 1st (you can even buy the course that comes with the CDs and study guide and not have to travel to the course location)and if you are a person that really likes practice questions-get this book.

Berntsen provides not only an exciting story (must-read, page-turner) as well as a lesson on how to operate in the field. Berntsen was THE field commander who ran the most effective campaign in U.S. history. It was quick and it was fast and it was also, by the way, economical. Berntsen and his team was outnumbered by 1,000 to 1. And yet they were able to improvise and to apply the resources at hand and prevail over an enemy that was sworn to kill as many Americans as possible ... and did exactly that on several occasions (the embassy bombings, the Cole, and finally on 9/11 with the killing of 3,000 Americans at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon). The enemy had planned and practiced and they had defeated the Russians and before them the British. Yet Berntsen describes in detail how "IN LESS THAN TWO MONTHS [my emphasis], approximately 110 Agency officers and 350 SF soldiers on the ground with seventy million dollars and the support of U.S. airpower and the help of our Afghan allies" had done what no one else had ever been able to do.

You feel Berntsen's frustrations when time and again bureaucrats back in the U.S. sabotaged the campaign with their need to "be the boss" even though they ignored the accurate information they were receiving and bitterly resented the successes by people who were actually in contact with the enemy.

The bureaucrats' mantra seemed to be: "Well, just because field operators ask for something, doesn't mean we have to give it to them."

You can see how Berntsen applies some basic principles: thoughtful audacity; speed of action; preparation for action and then rapid improvisation when actual real-life events intrude and conditions change; recognition of when change actually occurs.

Please get this book! This is a vital book if you are merely interested or, especially, if you have a family member in the military or working in any of the Homeland Security-related fields. Give this book as a gift to a son or daughter; this is history in the making.

We need to learn from Gary Berntsen. He lays out some very important lessons that you can actually experience through his eyes.

The bureaucrats at the CIA hate this book. It exposes them for what they are!! They are jealous and envious and are willing to sabotage our own safety for their own personal career ambitions. Even though four years have elapsed, the bureaucrats are still running things -- Berntsen describes how they let Osama Bin Laden escape and ... we still haven't caught him...

Get this book!! It is important that you read it quickly and pass it and its vital points to others who will continue the fight against the terrorists and against the bureaucrats.
